Weekend Getaway - Tarkarli Beach

A perfect start to a financial year - an extended weekend. For most Indian professionals, year begins with effect from 1st April. On account of Gudi Padwa (The Maharashtrain New Year), this year we could enjoy an extended weekend (2 April - 4 April). Visiting Tarkarli beach was high on our agenda for sometime. We had made many plans before but none could materialize. Fortunately, things fell into place and on 2nd April we drove down to Tarkarli. Tarkarli is a coastal village in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra, India and approximately 546 km from Mumbai (our base). The major attraction at Tarkarli is its clear and pristine beach (A welcome change from the beaches in Mumbai). The main reason why we wanted to go was to try our hands at snorkeling. Rhine Falls

Cousin P's mom and my aunt stays in a beautiful German town called Bad Durrheim, which is close to the Swiss border. P drove us down to Switzerland to see the famous Rhine Falls, shortly after lunch. The total distance from Bad Durrheim to Schaffhausen is around 50 kms. The Rhine Falls Rhine Falls or Rheinfall is the largest plain waterfall in Europe. The river Rhine, which is the second longest river in Europe, originates in the Swiss Alps, flows northwards and empties into the North Sea in Netherlands. P explained that most of the river is navigable i.e. you can take a boat from mouth of the river upto the Rhine Falls. As we passed the German - Swiss border, I kept our passports ready for inspection. However, the guards merely waved us away. P explained that Schengen countries have a porous border. It's the season to be jolly - Mexican Wedding Cakes

Christmas is around the corner and I have started making my grand plans for celebrating it. This time, I have made an ambitious plan of gifting home baked Christmas goodies to my neighbours. An ambitious plan - because I am a full time working professional (5 and 1/2 day work week), full time mother to a precocious 3 and 1/2 year old and a temporary house wife (my in-laws are holidaying for a couple of months). As I started making my plans, I realized that there are so many factors that you have to take into consideration. Most important is the palate preferences - egg (less), with(out) alcohol etc. Also, time is a major constraint for me. So, after a lot of net surfing, I have decided to bake two types of fruit cakes - with alcohol & eggs and without alcohol and eggs.
